Impact of Incorrect Age on Marriage Documents and Future Travel

Question

At the time of my marriage, my husband’s age was less in NID, passport, and certificate because his age was reduced by 2 years. His driving license was given in Kabinnama as it was original. And in NID he was 21 on 09 October and we got married on 29 September, which means 10 days before. Now my husband often goes abroad on business. Will it be a problem if I ever want to go along? Or if you want to settle outside, will it be a problem? And if there is a problem, what to do now?

Answer

The age discrepancy in the National ID (NID), passport, and other documents may create challenges, especially regarding travel and legal matters. Here’s a breakdown of how it could impact you and your options:

  1. Impact on Travel:
The discrepancy in your husband’s age (where his age is reduced by two years) might cause issues when traveling together, as the passport and NID are key documents required for international travel. Since Bangladesh strictly adheres to the documents’ authenticity, this discrepancy could raise questions from immigration authorities. If you plan to travel together, you could face questions regarding your husband’s real age.
  2. Settling Abroad:
If you plan to settle outside the country or apply for visas together, the age discrepancy might complicate the visa process or embassy verification. In some countries, discrepancies in age or personal documents can raise concerns, particularly regarding legal age for marriage or other immigration procedures. For example, many countries have strict regulations on the legal age of marriage, and discrepancies in age might cause the marriage to be questioned.
  3. What to Do Now:
    • Correct the Age Discrepancy: To avoid future problems, you can consider correcting the age discrepancy on official documents like the NID and passport. The process typically involves submitting an affidavit along with proof of the correct birthdate. Your husband can file an application to the authorities (like the National Registration Office) to request the correction.
    • Affidavit for Marriage Documents: In case of any travel issue or legal complication in the future, you can create an affidavit stating the correct date of birth and reference all official documents. This can help clarify the situation if questioned.
    • Consult an Immigration Lawyer: If you plan to move abroad or need clarity on specific immigration issues due to this discrepancy, it’s wise to consult an immigration lawyer or legal expert in the country you’re moving to. They can provide specific guidance on how this issue could impact your visa or settlement process.
